Sassy Sensory Gym Playmat | Review

Playmats are super popular amongst little ones and there seems to be an abundance of different styles and brands available to purchase. The Sassy Sensory Gym was one of the first play items I purchased. I actually searched for playmats for a while before I went ahead with this one, purely because they don’t come cheap and I wanted one that was a little different.

Sassy is a baby product brand which ‘works closely with child development experts to design innovative products, products with purpose.’ Coming from a teaching background I know how fundamental play is in a child’s life and I wanted to purchase a playmat that was going to enhance Leila’s development and promote exploration. I also wanted a playmat that was going to help build a solid foundation for lifelong learning by fostering development and stimulating the brain and all this can be started from the birth of a baby.

This Sassy Sensory Gym (£49.99) which is marketed from birth to 6 months+ (although I think I’ll be using it until Leila is on the move) it incorporates different textures, features and high contrast colours including black and white. I’m sure most people are aware that at birth babies are unable to focus well enough to distinguish colours but as the eyes mature high contrasts are the first point of focus and black and white are the highest point of contrast. This playmat incorporates all those visual senses which inspire babies to learn and grow.

There are six fab sensory toys combined within the play mat, a light rattle, two mirrors, a teether and crinkled shapes made from a taffeta material. The unique side bar allows baby to move the toys across with easy grab action. The only downfall I can think of is that it would have been good if at least one of the toys made a musical sound or incorporated a lullaby to enhance engagement. Leila loves this play gym and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to purchase a play mat, it is well worth the price tag.
